Frequently Asked Questions
What can I put on a burn?
Cold running water is the best way to soothe a burn before seeking medical assistance. Do not put any ointments, creams or home remedies immediately on to a burn injury, as this can trap heat in, causing further pain and potential tissue damage.
Once the burn has been cooled and treated, your medical professional might advise using a soothing burn ointment or petroleum jelly on the burned skin to assist with maintaining flexibility and easing tightness during the healing process. This is where Waxelene Multi-Purpose Ointment really comes into its own!
To use Waxelene as an ointment for burns, simply apply a thin layer to the affected area. You can reapply as needed to keep the skin moisturized and protected. Waxelene is safe for all skin types and can be used on minor burns, including sunburns and small kitchen burns.
You can reapply Waxelene as needed, usually every few hours, to keep the skin moisturized and protected. Over time, the burn will begin to heal, and you should notice a reduction in pain and inflammation.
Do burns heal faster covered or uncovered?
Most minor burns will heal best covered. Bandaging a burn keeps air and debris from irritating the area, and gives a layer of protection to blistered skin. It’s ideal to use a sterile gauze bandage wrapped loosely, rather than a fluffy material that may get stuck to wounds and cause infection.
If burned skin is blistered, the blisters should not be popped, as broken skin is more likely to lead to issues with healing. Instead, gently apply a soothing ointment such as Waxelene to the blister and surrounding skin and keep loosely covered with a bandage. This ensures that the wound will be protected but still have adequate air circulation to assist with the healing process.
How do I heal a burn quickly?
After a burn, your skin needs support to be able to rebuild itself. To heal a first-degree burn quickly at home, follow these steps:
- Immediately cool the burn with running water or a wet compress.
- Seek medical assistance if the burn is over a large area, if the victim is very old or young, or if you think the burn has penetrated deeper than the top layer of skin.
- Once treated, to assist with healing, regularly apply a burn ointment or moisturizing treatment such as Waxelene to keep the skin hydrated and flexible. The ointment will create a barrier between the skin and the outside world, protecting the burn from further damage and promoting healing.
- Cover the moisturized burn loosely with a lint-free bandage or dressing, changed daily. With the correct dressing, you shouldn’t need to let a wound ‘air out’ or create a scab until it is well into the healing stage.
- Continue to apply moisturizer to the area once it is unbandaged, as burned skin needs time to re-develop the oil glands that keep our skin soft in the first place. Massaging the edges of the burned area also assists with blood flow and helps to prevent a build-up of scar tissue.
Does ice help burns heal faster?
No! Ice is a very bad idea on burned skin as the dramatic temperate change can cause even more problems. Save the ice for a cold drink instead.
